Using Conflict Resolution Strategies to Assess Growth Motive

Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of emotion regulation techniques individuals may engage in when faced with a difficult conflict. Cognitive reappraisal is associated with reducing emotional impact of the stressor by reframing the situation. On the other hand, problem-focused strategies involve using emotions to drive behaviour towards working through the conflict. This encourages individuals to actively manage the situation, by thinking of strategies to overcome the obstacle. Problem-focused strategies are oriented towards trying to change the situation rather than how the individual feels about the situation, Therefore, we hypothesize that individuals engaging in problem-focused coping strategies will demonstrate a stronger growth motive as they are taking action in managing the stressor directly
